Hope
In April 2015, we learned that there was a 10-month-old pony living in the Harz Mountains whose hooves were so deformed that it would soon no longer be able to walk.
We got in touch with the owners and got permission to bring the pony to us in the Lüneburg Heath.
Hope, as we called her, had atrophied flexor tendons in her front legs due to prolonged stall keeping on soft ground. The front of her hooves were being pulled further and further towards the ground.
She would soon no longer have been able to walk. That would have been her death sentence.
We were able to pick up Hope and just two weeks later she was operated on near Hamburg by Dr. Christine Becker after our veterinarian Dr. Sabas had carried out the outpatient preparation. All of this was only possible thanks to donations and the dedicated help of friends of our association.
Today Hope is a beautiful little mare. She lives in a herd with other horses in an open stable.
Stella
During the preliminary examination carried out by our association member, the animal health practitioner Claudia Schilling, we had already noticed that sharp edges and crooked incisors made it difficult for Stella to eat and we made an appointment.
As always, our dental specialist @kristinahackwarnke has fixed everything professionally and confidently. In the last photo you can see the eye again. Everything is developing splendidly
.Now Stella will hopefully gain weight
Amethyst
His owner died suddenly in 2017. While a new home was quickly found for her dogs, Amethyst was suddenly left without support.
We have taken on a food sponsorship for him because he was allowed to stay at his foster home and has now become their property.
We are proud that he celebrated his 32nd birthday in February 2024.
Sammy
Sammy is a very old Shetland pony that was going to be slaughtered. We were able to prevent this by putting a family in touch with the place where he was being taken. Sammy was allowed to move and became the best friend of the family's little son Finni. When Sammy had to undergo surgery for a severe tooth infection, the family found themselves in financial difficulties because Sammy was so old that there was no insurance for the operation.
Euthanasia should not be an option, Finni should definitely be spared this trauma. Thanks to a great fundraising campaign, our association was able to help make paying the hospital costs a little easier. Finni and Sammy are still inseparable. Great, isn't it?
On January 22, Sammy was welcomed into his new home like this, instead of being transported to Italy for slaughter. Even more than two years later, the family writes to us, "How quickly time flies - and it's still love at first sight."
Fouquet
Fouquet
The fate of old, "retired" stallions is rarely noticed by the public. At some point they disappear from the spotlight, replaced by younger, more modern stallions.
The life achievements of such stallions are still in the back of some people's minds, but where the horses live and under what circumstances is rarely questioned.
Now we do not want to put all owners through the same sieve. However, life is not easy for old stallions, especially after many years of stud service, and keeping them is not
Many of them have been taken out of sport and are no longer in demand as producers of offspring. Handling stallions is a challenge that requires experience and certain types of husbandry and costs money. One of these long-serving, formerly well-known sport and stud stallions was Fouquet. After being retired as a sport and stud stallion, he was able to enjoy a few more wonderful years in the Lüneburg Heath with daily grazing.
Stallions that have been kept separated their entire lives are hardly compatible with other horses. They live a lonely, forgotten life, unfortunately often locked away in a box. We know of some of these fates across all breeds. It is rarely possible to help.
Fouquet was kept company by an orphaned calf and, at times, by a donkey foal. That was good for him and for Emmi, the weak calf who would have died. The little donkey stallion Harry also enriched his life until he was adopted. Emmi naturally also had contact with other donkeys and after Fouquet's death she moved into a group of rescued cows. We were able to contribute with donations of goods and food and, through our THP, also support his health and that of Emmi.
On November 24, 2021, Fouquet sent a final greeting to all his friends. He passed away with dignity, without pain and without suffering in the presence of the woman who took him from the stud farm and gave him a good life in old age. Fouquet was a great horse and we are grateful that he shared his last years with us. His life was not always easy. Note: Fouquet was born on May 21, 1997 as the son of Florestan I. He has achieved countless successes in show jumping. He was active in the sport in America for a few years and then came back to Westphalia.

Mats
Mats moved to a new home as a gelding at 18 months of age. He was incredibly sweet and friendly and very cool. After six months, his behavior suddenly changed and he began to mount the mares and his games became rougher. The family's children became afraid of him. Suddenly the owners noticed that Mats was developing testicles. So he was not yet a gelding, it was just that his testicles had not descended when he was bought.
The owner family wanted to get rid of Mats quickly, and castration on site was out of the question - apparently they no longer had any trust or they no longer liked Mats. He is a heavy or medium-weight cold-blooded horse, which was perhaps not known when he was taken in.
Mats had to move out immediately and be released financially. We were able to help here, found someone who pre-financed Mats, were able to find a suitable home and take him to a suitable stable near Magdeburg for castration.
The new owner, Rocco Roesch, is an experienced trainer of logging horses and forestry work. All of his horses are worked with the finest voice aids and he was happy to take Max in.
Rocco arranged for castration and temporary accommodation and after just under three weeks, Mats was allowed to move in with Rocco's mares. He is doing great and is back to his old self. He even willingly lets his little grandson sit on his back and he is friendly and careful with the other grandson.
Mats will learn a lot from Rocco.
Through donations we were able to contribute to Mats' rescue and bring him to Magdeburg ourselves.
